TV Season 2015 – Television Premieres for the week of September 27th

Yes, I’m back!  Here is the rundown of the upcoming TV series premieres, new shows and the heads up on returning shows.

Here are this week’s offerings.  You ready?

Sunday – 9/27  Debuting shows

It’s a blood moon, lunar eclipse and a big night for debuting shows – both new and returning.

Blood and Oil (ABC) – What it’s about… A couple looks to cash in on the modern-day oil boom in North Dakota. Af family based fight over oil money?  Sounds a bit like Dallas to me, with a woodsy vibe.

  • What’s the big deal?  Don Johnson is back!  Also stars Chace Crawford, Amber Valletta and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
  • Watch this if you like:  Revenge, Dallas and other sudsy fare.

Quantico (ABC) – What it’s about… A look at the lives of young FBI recruits training at the Quantico base in Virginia.

  • What’s the big deal? This one is getting great buzz.  It stars a slate of relative unknowns; the cast is led by Priyanka Chopra. This one is right up my alley, so I’ll be watching for sure.
  • Watch this if you like:  The Blacklist, Homeland.

CSI Series Finale Movie (CBS) –  This series wrapping 2 hour finale gets an honorable mention.

Returning show premieres:  60 Minutes, Bob’s Burgers, Once Upon A Time,  The Simpsons, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Family Guy, Last Man on Earth

Monday – 9/28:  Debuting shows

Monday night had its big roll out last week.  The only début this week is –

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah (Comedy) – or the première of The Daily Show without Jon Stewart.  Many will be anxious to see what happens.

Tuesday – 9/29:  Debuting shows

Grandfathered (FOX)  –  What it’s about…  A confirmed bachelor discovers he’s a dad–and a grandfather.

  • What’s the big deal?  Interesting concept and the return of John Stamos to series format.  Also, stars Josh Peck of Nickelodeon fame (Drake and Josh), Paget Brewster and Christina Milian.
  • Watch this if you like:  Hmmm, I’m thinking 2 1/2 Men sounds about right.

The Grinder (FOX) – What it’s about…  Television lawyer Dean Sanderson moves back to his small home town after a stint in Hollywood thinking his time on TV qualifies him to run his family’s law firm..

  • What’s the big deal?  Will a preposterous premise and an unfortunate title hinder this Rob Lowe / Fred Savage vehicle?  The jury is still out…
  • Watch this if you like:  I’m expecting off-color courtroom banter and family drama — not much around to compare it to now.

Returning show premieres:  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Beyond the Tank

Wednesday – 9/30:  Debuting showsWednesday also had a big week last week for returns.  There’s only one show debuting this week.

Code Black  (CBS) – What it’s about… The staff of the LA County Hospital emergency room treat patients under difficult circumstances.

  • What’s the big deal?  It’s a hospital drama… ER for the new day.  The cast is a relative bunch of unknowns, led by veteran actress Marcia Gay Harden.  Melanie Chandra, most recently seen on The Brink, and Ben Hollingsworth of Cult also star.
  • Watch this if you like:  Tense medical dramas, like Grey’s Anatomy and ER.

Returning show premieres: Criminal Minds, Chicago P.D.

Thursday – 10/1:  No new shows tonight!

Returning show premieres: Bones, The Blacklist, Sleepy Hollow

Friday – 10/2: Debuting shows

Dr. Ken (ABC) – What it’s about… A frustrated doctor juggles his career, marriage, and family..

  • What’s the big deal?  Stars the very funny and sometimes irreverent Ken Jeong, Dave Foley and Tisha Campbell-Martin
  • Watch this if you like:  Family based comedy like blackish, Fresh Off the Boat or Modern Family.

Saturday – 10/3 – Returning show premieres: Saturday Night Live

Last word:  I’m anxious for Once and Quantico, also looking forward to the new comedies to see if they are buzzworthy or not.

There’s a lot happening next week, so come back for more.  Also, I’ll be handing out grades to the new kids, so be on the lookout for a new show report card soon!
